Toronto Maple Leafs Sign Troy Stecher to 2-Year Contract

The Toronto Maple Leafs signed Troy Stecher to a 2-year contract on Monday.

What happened?

Troy Stecher could have become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

He had 14 points in 58 games for the Maple Leafs this season.

The 32-year-old defenseman was claimed off waivers from the Edmonton Oilers on Nov. 15.

Why it matters for Toronto Maple Leafs

Stecher has 131 points in 624 regular-season games for several teams, including the Vancouver Canucks and Detroit Red Wings.

He also has seven points in 29 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

The Maple Leafs are looking to improve after a disappointing season, finishing 15th in the Eastern Conference with a 32-36 record.

What comes next?

The team acquired Darren Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning on June 19 for a fifth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.

Defenseman Brandon Carlo was sent to the St. Louis Blues for two third-round picks in the 2026 draft.

The Maple Leafs selected forward Gavin McKenna with the No. 1 pick.

And the team is looking to turn things around after failing to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2015-16.

So the signing of Stecher is a key move for the team.

But the Maple Leafs still have work to do to become a playoff contender.

The team's current standing is 15th in the Eastern Conference, with a 32-36 record, on a L7 streak.
