The Toronto Maple Leafs have locked in two key pieces of their future plans. Forward Ryan Tverberg and defenseman Emil Andrae both received contract extensions from the club.
Toronto Maple Leafs signed forward Ryan Tverberg to a one-year, $850,000 extension. The deal keeps the 24-year-old under contract for another season. Defenseman Emil Andrae also agreed to terms on a two-year deal worth $1.55 million annually.
Tverberg was a seventh-round pick (213th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft. He climbed Toronto’s depth chart last season. In 63 games with the Toronto Marlies, he posted 15 goals and 21 assists for 36 points. He then added six goals and eight assists in 24 playoff games as Toronto won the 2026 Calder Cup.
Andrae arrived in Toronto via trade from the Philadelphia Flyers. He came over with goaltender Samuel Ersson and a third-round pick in exchange for Joseph Woll and Simon Benoit. Toronto later flipped Ersson to Ottawa for a fifth-rounder. Andrae’s speed and puck-moving ability fit the Maple Leafs’ third-pairing plans.
These moves shore up Toronto’s depth heading into the 2026-27 season. The club sits 15th in the Eastern Conference with a 32-36 record on a seven-game losing streak. Their next game is September 19 against the Montreal Canadiens.
Tverberg’s extension rewards his breakout AHL season. He went scoreless in two NHL games late last year but earned a +1 rating. His playoff run with the Marlies showed he can contribute when called up. Andrae’s two-year deal keeps an intriguing young defenseman in the mix. He’ll likely split time with Troy Stecher, who re-signed for two years at $1.35 million AAV.
Tverberg probably won’t make Toronto’s opening night roster. He’ll compete for a call-up spot if injuries strike. Andrae figures to rotate in and out of the lineup as a depth defenseman. Both players bring upside and versatility to a club looking to rebound after a tough season.
Ryan Tverberg told reporters on April 13: “Growing up here, especially watching them my whole life, it’s going to mean a lot.” His development and Andrae’s arrival add options for Toronto’s coaching staff as training camp nears.
